Going back to a pre-pandemic life is a delusion, because the changes the pandemic caused are irreversible. Just as the rape of an individual produces everlasting scars the angst of loosing identity produces perennial societal trauma. Instead of seeking to solve the crises we created the idea of a new normal.
As members of society we have to be able to discuss our points of view in the public sphere; social distancing and self-isolation contradict this liberty. By covering our faces, our voice is losing its sound metaphorically. Thus, what constitutes us as individuals blurs as there are but faces covered in masks. Do we have to accept a perennial limitation of our identity or ought we to defend our spheres of liberty and independence?
